Overview

Are you frustrated by the indignities of life in today's workplace? More work, longer hours, fewer benefits, incompetent bosses-career consultant and expert Andrea Kay has heard it all. In her new book, Kay connects with the 85 percent of the workforce who feel unsatisfied with their careers. Readers will immediately recognize themselves in the stories she tells, gleaned from the thousands of unhappy workers who have responded to Kay's nationally syndicated column and appearances. But Kay doesn't just explore what's wrong with the workplace today; she empowers workers to think about their careers in a new way, to get past disillusionment and feelings of powerlessness to see the possibilities and control they do have. She counsels readers on how to aim high and be fearless in presenting new ideas; how to cope with the unpredictable; how to determine whether a company is a good match for you; how to define the kind of work arrangement you want, and get up the nerve to ask for it. Throughout the text and the thought-provoking exercises that accompany it, she offers ways to take concrete and positive steps that will improve both your career and your life. Work may indeed be a bitch sometimes, but with Andrea Kay's help, readers will work it out.

This book is worth every penny

Wow, what an eye opener this book was for me. Before I read this, I had no idea how much I was a part of the problem. I was reading Step 2 that describes many of my bad habits and beliefs, and thought, has she been looking at my life? How does she know I do this? What is great is that she offers you some wonderful ways to change those things. Step 1 makes you really see this too. Step 3 was another one of those AHA moments when I saw how I stop myself and therefore stop getting more enjoyment from my work. I am so grateful for the help this book has given me. I am back in charge and I can't thank you, Andrea Kay, enough.

    I LOVE THIS BOOK!

It is written with such sensitivity, humor and practical advice, that I felt like the author must know me because she knew exactly what I was going through. You will connect with her stories because they are about us! I did in a way I haven't with any other book that tries to help you with your work and career. She clearly gets what we go through in our careers and inspires you to want to do your best. But she doesn't let you get away with anything. She speaks with authority in a friendly, down to earth way. Her 6 steps make you see who's really in charge, which really, truly is you, if you are willing to look at that. There are many exercises that will help you. Since I have used them at work, my days in my job have changed, as well as how I am at home. I get along better, I feel more relaxed and I don't feel like everyone else is upsetting me. When I interviewed for a job since our company is going through layoffs, I used her lists of questions to ask during interviews, her lists of what to look for and again I felt more in control than I ever have in an interview. I won't make the same mistakes I did in the past! Andrea Kay is one wise woman. I highly recommend you hear what she has to say and keep this as your career bible.

    Practical Empowerment

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is either confused or unhappy with the current state of their work and life. I bought this book, because I was desperate for a change. This book is the perfect (non-insulting/non-pacifying) how-to book. It is a book that demands you to be honest without the melodrama of just being pissed off. Through simple internal conversations, you become empowered to change, whether its you, your attitude, or your goals. The principles that I have learned have translated past work and into my personal life as well. This book helped me to be acutely aware of my own personal power and responsibility.

    I Also Recommend:

    Bad

This book is pretty much useless. It's not well researched or authoritative and doesn't really contain many good ideas for making your work life more enjoyable or easier.

Don't waste your money! Dan Miller's books do what this book purports to do in a much more coherent way!
