Works for Violin & Piano by Franck, Debussy & Schumann

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - James Leonard

There is not only Schwarzberg's ardent tone and Argerich's fervent technique, there is also their forceful ensemble, they way the listen to each other and respond to each other, and how they play with, rather than against, each other. It's just that there are other, more overtly emotionally passionate recordings of the works in the world -- Ricci and Argerich's incandescent 1981 live recording of the Franck sonata comes ...

While not the most viscerally passionate performances of violin sonatas of Franck and Debussy ever recorded, these performances by Austrian violinist Dora Schwarzberg and Argentinean pianist Martha Argerich are still passionate in their own sweet way. There is not only Schwarzberg's ardent tone and Argerich's fervent technique, there is also their forceful ensemble, they way the listen to each other and respond to each other, and how they play with, rather than against, each other. It's just that there are other, more overtly emotionally passionate recordings of the works in the world -- Ricci and Argerich's incandescent 1981 live recording of the Franck sonata comes quickly to mind -- and in that department Schwarzberg and Argerich can't compete. But in terms of sheer passionate musicianship, their performances can't be beat. It goes back to their ensemble. Schwarzberg and Argerich really do listen to each other -- the unity of their tempos and forms is incomparable -- really do respond to each other -- if Schwarzberg uses rubato to shape a phrase, Argerich is right there with her -- and really do play with and not against each other. While other more overtly passionate performers -- for example Ricci and Argerich -- prod and even provoke each other, Schwarzberg and Argerich are pulling together and performing as one and it can for once be truly said that they make beautiful music together. Avanti's recording is utterly transparent.
