    SiFy at its best

Doc has it right, this collection will get you hooked and have you {and me} begging for the rest of the collection in eBook format. From the time of our Fathers imaginations through Space and Time, worlds and civilizations across galaxies Doc Smith takes you there.

Vintage SciFi - dated but a fun read

This collection is 1940's vintage science fiction that provided a pleasant stroll down memory lane to a aging scifi fan. However, these stories are probably out of sync with a younger reader's tastes. None the less, Doc Smith was a founding father of twentith century science fiction and this collection is a fun read.

Fans of Sci-Fi should definitely read.

The slang may be dated, as well as the technology references, but E.E. Smith's stories and plots draw you into so completely, that such issues fall to the side. My only complaint is that I wish this collection included all of the illustrations that are so obviously missing.
If you're a fan of Sci-Fi, then it would be a shame to pass on the stories that helped ground the genre deeply into the foundations of our pop-culture.

    What a Collection!!!

Excellent selection of "Doc Smith" books. His stories are for the true science fiction readers. He has the actual facts and his version of what could happen and does sometimes show up. The writings are at the level for all ages and lack of reality to make his books an enjoyment to read and forget where you are in this crazy world.

The book is dated, the action is good, and the conversion to eBook is terrible but usable.

Of course these books are old-fashioned; they're old, and come by it honestly. Expect plenty of action, plenty of sexism, brilliant virile young men and nubile young women (they comment on this in one of the books...) The stories are somewhat repetitive from one to another; the same themes are played out repeatedly. But, there is enough variation to the plots to keep the stories interesting, and parts are very clever. For instance, we get to see what a human looks like from the point of view of a hideous, although noble, alien. Some improbable parts are nonetheless inspiring, in a sort of "if only it could work that way" sense. For example, in one tale, a horrible war is interrupted by a mixture of common sense and courage.

The inexpensive eBook version that I purchased was very poorly done. There were plenty of typos. Formatting was often poor. Odd textual characters showed up in various places throughout the book; presumably they should have been formatting and/or character-based graphics, but were transformed into garbage and never corrected. However, the eBook was readable on my original Nook despite these flaws.
