As and avid reader of Sci-Fi as a teenager I quite by accident stumbled onto the works of Burroughs while searching the stacks of a local library. My first introduction to Mr. Burroughs characters was Tarzan of the Apes. That introduction began a years long relationship with the characters and stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs. If one enjoys adventure stories with larger than life though thoroughly believable human heroes then the Collected Works is for you. It contains the complete series of Tarzan, John Carter of Mars, Pelucidar and even Burroughs less well known series such as Caspak and Mucker. Burroughs stories are far more than just action adventure. The characters from the hero to the most evil villain, though all have extraordinary qualities, are believable and the reader will most assuredly identify with some character in each of the novels. In addition to being a great read the style of the writing, plot settings and character interactions provide the reader with a glimpse into the values and morality of a simpler more morally absolute time (the very 1st Tarzan novel for example was published in 1912). For many this glimpse into the past will be most enjoyable. Unfortunately those sensitive to contemporary political incorrectness unable to disconnect from them will misjudge the actions and values of many of Burroughs' characters. For those - The Collected Works is not for you. Otherwise - read and enjoy. Burroughs works are not what one would describe as great literature. They are pure entertainment. There are no life defining messages to be found in them. No proselytizing. Just thoroughly enjoyable reading for the adventurephile.

My grandfather insisted that I read Rice-Burroughs when I was young. Since then I have developed an abiding love for heroic tales and science fiction that inspires. I read the "Hunger Games" because my daughter insisted. I prefer the stories of Tarzan and John Carter to the depressing mood set in those books. If you liked Firefly or Babylon 5 you will love John Carter. Tarzan is a guilty pleasure because it is so politicaly incorrect. And after reading the rest of Rice-Burroughs works, you will see why some people call him the father of American Science Fiction.

This ebook has so many great works in it from the John Carter stories to Tarzan and beyond. It is also well formatted. I highly recommend this book.

Burroughs' social Darwinism doesn't age well, and his style can be a bit over the top. But this stuff was largely written for kids--the same audience who read Marvel Comics back in the day--and it's that brand of chest-beating over-the-top. In small doses, it can be endearingly cheesy and entertaining. ERB is a low-brow Kipling of sorts. If you like Rudyard Kipling or Marvel Comics, or even if you just want to see Tarzan in his original habitat, you may enjoy this.
