Meet the Author

Herman Melville (August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. He is best known for his novel Moby-Dick. His first three books gained much contemporary attention (the first, Typee, became a bestseller), but after a fast-blooming literary success in the late 1840s, his popularity declined precipitously in the mid-1850s and never recovered during his lifetime.

When he died in 1891, he was almost completely forgotten. It was not until the "Melville Revival" in the early 20th century that his work won recognition, especially Moby-Dick, which was hailed as one of the literary masterpieces of both American and world literature. In 1919, the unfinished manuscript for his novella Billy Budd was discovered by his first biographer. He published a version in 1924, which was quickly acclaimed by notable British critics as another masterpiece of Melville's. He was the first writer to have his works collected and published by the Library of America.

    Highly Recommended

This edition of Melville's works is, I think, the best... certainly a real bargain at this price. It really does have over 100 Melville's works, not just the better known ones. It is excellently formatted and very easy to navigate. This ebook is worth buying if only for the masterpiece that is Bartleby the Scrivener. All in all, an impressive collection of this wonderful author and a great addition to my NOOK Library.

Does not work very well with monochrome model

Buy this ONLY if you have a Nook COLOR. It is a pain to navigate on the tiny touch screen at the bottom of the Nook Classic. the TOC looks like it is written as a web page! you need to be able to find a book/chapter directly by tapping it or with a mouse on a PC. the scroll through works badly on my little navigator.

    Great bargain...if it would work

I was excited to find an ebook containing so much of Melville's work in one place so I wouldn't need to track the works down individually. However, I guess you get what you pay for. This ebook is pretty messed up. At least one of the works appears to be missing, as "Bartleby" is duplicated under the second content heading. The formatting of the poetry, while legible, is odd. Navigation would be tricky due to the absence of sub-contents for each of the main content sections (such as navigable chapters for Moby Dick), but this is ultimately a moot point, since it doesn't work anyway. When the pages aren't freezing or skipping, they take up to ten seconds to turn to the next one. None of my other books do this, and I've archived/unarchived it a few times, rebooted, etc., so I don't think it's simply a problem with my device or a corrupted copy. I don't know if B&N offers refunds for these things, but if not, at least I'm only out $3.
