Booknews
This edition reproduces the six volumes of edited by Nicholas Rowe in 1709 and the volume of poems edited by Charles Gildon in 1710. The introduction by Peter Holland (the Shakespeare Institute, U. of Birmingham) discusses the influence of Rowe's work<-->until 1986, when the Wells-Taylor edition appeared, collected editions of the plays reflected Rowe's character names, definitions of where scenes took place, list of characters, act and scene divisions, emendations, and punctuation. The 1709 edition represented a number of firsts: the first octavo printing, first illustrated edition ("adorned with cuts"), first to introduce act and scene divisions which were lacking in the folios, and the first extensive biography of Shakespeare (following the introduction). Widely esteemed as the greatest writer in the English language, William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an actor and theatrical producer in addition to writing plays and sonnets. Dubbed "The Bard of Avon," Shakespeare oversaw the building of the Globe Theatre in London, where a number of his plays were staged, the best-known of which include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth. The First Folio, a printed book of 36 of his comedies, tragedies, and history plays, was published in 1623.

This ebook has really revived my enthusiasm for Shakespeare. Having all of Shakespeare's texts in one ebook allows me to go quickly to another play to look something up or spot cross-connections. That can be very exciting. The tales of Shakespeare still speak today. We just need to open our ears and our hearts so we can listen. In short, this comprehensive edition has truly enriched my reading of Shakespeare.

I own a simple touch and this e-book takes anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes to load if it does at all - then to boot none of the links in the contents work. It also freezes and shuts down my nook. if your looking for the complete works go to "The Complete Works: William Shakespeare - optimized for nook by lotus." So much better!!

The plays display well. The plays are formated well. I like the layout. The Table of Contents is the BEST available for such an extensive collection. Its outright fun to navigate. Buy this one.

It is very frustrating that there is not a copy of a good Shakespeare collection--one that separates out the two different versions of King Lear, for example, or one that actually contains footnotes/additional information as you read. Make an electronic version of the Riverside Shakespeare collection--something, in other words for Shakespeare lovers!
