World 2003

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Mark Schwartz
The second compilation of world music from BBC tastemaker Charlie Gillett to receive international distribution, World 2003 once again takes the pulse of this most broadly defined genre. What are Gillett's criteria? "Music likely to be more interesting than most of what is available in the established genres" is how the DJ sees it, and that holds true over the course of this two-CD set. There are hundreds of miscellaneous "global sounds" collections, but few can match this one for its authoritative breadth, easy-on-the-ears melodicism, and consistent surprises. Connoisseurs will notice almost immediately the fulcrum shifting away from African and Latin American artists...

Connoisseurs will notice almost immediately the fulcrum shifting away from African and Latin American artists -- only 8 African tracks of the 35 here, and fewer Latinos -- in favor of the alternative sounds of Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Arab world. One of the BBC's most recent success stories was Portuguese fado singer Mariza, who appears on this edition as well, along with her countrywoman Lula Pena. Pena's subdued, dark-hued fado is not just the polar opposite to Mariza's dramatic delivery, it's likely to surprise even experts. From neighboring Spain comes dynamic flamenco hybrids -- the kinetic Ojos de Brujo and a duet between Cuban pianist Pepesito Reyes and cantaora Estrella Morente -- as well as frenzied world pop from Manu Chao, Dusminguet, Amparanoia, and Brazilian transplant Wagner Pa. Is Barcelona destined to become the new Paris, until recently the capital of world music? Gillett seems to think so. But perhaps the "new world order" here owes to the realization that spellbinding music exists in all cultures. Gillett rightly allows the late Joe Strummer's Mescaleros, Canadians the Be Good Tanyas, and Arizona's Calexico in on the fun, and none are folk groups, either -- they just show a healthy appetite for sounds just outside the Western pop mainstream. After 20 years of "no borders" agitprop from global music boosters, World 2003 shows us what that really means -- that the world, and its music, is just outside your door.
All Music Guide - Chris Nickson
British radio disc jockey Charlie Gillett has been a groundbreaker on his weekly programs, introducing listeners to plenty of new music from all over the globe. On the second of his annual compilations to be released in the U.S., there's plenty of meat, and lots of unfamiliar names -- many of whom deliver the goods. Some are familiar to world music mavens -- people like the late Joe Strummer, Manu Chao, fado singer Mariza, Hukwe Zawose, and the wonderful Orchestre Baobab. But many more are new, or at best, somewhat obscure. The Senegalese hip-hop of Daara J is the equal of anything in the States, while Dusminguet's Spanish neo-pop is unalloyed joy to the ears. Calexico might seem an odd choice, in among the rest, but their desert mood works well between Russia's Markscheider Kunst and Kenya's Nyota Ndogo. The wonderful oddity of the whole two-disc set, however, is a version of James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" by Guinean Sekouba Bambino, which sets the soul song over spare kora, with strings and backing vocals for a sublime mix of continents. About the only track that fails to delight comes from Temple of Sound, who seem to try too hard to be exotic. Beyond that, there's simply so much to discover, whether it's the accessible Iraqi sounds of Ilham Al Madfai or Slovakia's Sui Vesan, who comes across as a uniquely talented singer/songwriter. More than you can easily take in during one hearing, but a joy to listen to often.
