Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Hynes-Berry
The Dinosaur set of "Puzzle Cards" promises to be a collection of "mind bending brain teasers" about everyone's favorite prehistoric creatures. Each of the seventy-five cards in the pack combines a dinosaur factoid with a closed question. For example, we learn that predator dinosaurs often have eyes on the front of their heads instead of the sides. But it is hard to distinguish from the drawing which two are predators and which two are prey. The puzzles are said to be for children five to seven—which is definitely prime dinosaur interest age. However, the reading level of the information and many of the tasks would be extremely challenging for most children of this age. I do not know too many who could unscramble "toparred" to spell an animal hunted by others—predator. As is true of other Puzzle Decks, the puzzles on each card are random, so that a question about classification may follow one about fossil remains. The dinosaur fanatics I know would prefer a good book with an index and clear pictures. Or better yet, offer them a trip to a museum. Reviewer: Mary Hynes-Berry
