Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Hynes-Berry
The seventy-five cards in this set issued by Chronicle Books are glorified four color flash-cards, complete with an answer guide. It seems to be marketed to appeal to parents who want to be sure their little darling is at the head of the class. The claim is that the "puzzles" on each card will cover all the key kindergarten skills; the problem with them is the same one we are facing in test-driven schools. Each card calls for a single right answer; there is no problem to solve. At the same time, all the skills are isolated. Card number eighteen asks the child to line up four boys from shortest to tallest. On the flip side, the task is to match initial consonants with the names of four animals. Once the rote response has been given, there is little to invite the children to review them. In any case, the text that explains each problem is well beyond kindergarteners. The three to five year olds for whom this deck is targeted would learn much more from playing a good game of "I Spy" with an adult or older sibling. Reviewer: Mary Hynes-Berry
