Overview

Established during the rebuilding period after World War II, the World Bank issued its first loan of $250 million in 1946, to France for postwar reconstruction. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also was established as a result of the devastation of World War II. Although their responsibilities still include post-conflict assistance, today these organizations work on such important issues as debt servicing; gender equity; microcredit; and HIV/AIDS awareness, treatment, and prevention programs. The World Bank and the IMF also strive toward the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, which call for the elimination of poverty and the implementation of sustainable development. Although both organizations have been criticized for some of their policies, the Western world as well as 60 percent of Asians and 70 percent of Africans believe that the World Bank and the IMF have a positive effect on their countries.
