World Dance: The Drum & Bass Experience

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Rick Anderson
If you like drum'n'bass but are tired of the soundalike compilations that have flooded the market in the wake of the breakbeat juggernaut of the mid- to late '90s, this may be the one for you. Although none of the tracks on these two discs break any really new ground, they all share a hardness of texture that keeps your attention. It also helps that there's a strong reggae influence throughout, one which is expressed in the melodically interesting basslines and the regular appearance of reggae singers and deejays. Disc One is a continuous mix by DJ Hype, and it features his own outstanding "We Must Unite" as well as the equally fine "Ganja Man" by DJ Krome and Mr. Time. ...

"R-Type" by Jo includes one of the better basslines of the program. Disc Two is a continuous mix by Ellis Dee, and its tracks refer even more explicitly to the reggae-derived sounds of British jungle. "Everyman" is essentially a junglized remake of the reggae classic of the same name with a soundalike vocalist and a brutally propulsive breakbeat; Sound of the Future contributes the thrilling and almost impossibly complex "The Lighter Rollers Remix." There aren't very many essential drum'n'bass compilations out there, but this is one of them.
