Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6-10-These introductory overviews present historical as well as contemporary looks at their topics. The authors examine the complexities of the issues they address; for example, Burby makes an important distinction between crisis-induced and chronic hunger. The timeliness of works consulted make these titles useful updates to previous sources. However, neither book provides specific source notes for statistics and opinions cited, and the volumes' bland format, broken up only by small, black-and-white photographs, will not attract casual browsers. Nevertheless, the indexes and tables of contents are detailed and clear. Useful additions for report writers with little previous knowledge of the subjects.-Carrol McCarthy, Tower Hill School, Wilmington, DE

    World Hunger Book Review
World Hunger by Liza N. Burby has really opened my eyes. This book lists endless facts about: world population, food production, death count, and much more. It is a very quick read with only one hundred pages, however this book is certainly quality over quantity.

Something interesting in this book, to me, was how so many different things can cause mass hunger. Human behavior, war, environmental conditions, etc. War causes serious hunger problems due to the burning and slashing of crops by soldiers so that the enemy soldiers don’t have anything to eat. The environment causes a lot of hunger issues in the world as well. Drought, natural disasters, and so much more can lead to awful conditions for plants to grow causing massive hunger issues. Humans have a huge impact on food shortages as well. Overgrazing, deforestation, poor farming practices, limiting genetic diversity, and desertification, are just some of the topics covered in this book. And those are just under the human impacts section. It is awful to see just how horrible hunger can be for a nation, or a group of people. Hunger can lead to a country becoming very poor, or a person to have many irreversible diseases.

Burby really makes it easy to grasp the gravity that the problem of hunger is in this world. What is especially nice, is that she does this in a very non-complex way so that anyone can understand. She really lays a good foundation of information that can allow someone to explore this subject further if they want to become very knowledgeable on world hunger.
