Austin singer-songwriter Michael Fracasso brings a heady mix of tunes and performances on this set produced by Charlie Sexton. Fracasso's voice combines the more boyish elements of Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison, and his knack for the well-turned phrase makes the inclusion of his lyrics in the CD booklet a welcome bonus indeed. There are as much shades of late-'60s British pop in Fracasso's best songs here "Our Finest Hour," the title track as there are standard folk music aspects, making this guitar-dominated outing a genre-mixed affair that straddles both sides of the fence. Fans of a good strong pop hook will find tunes like "Gold," "Started on the Wrong Foot" and "Chain Link Fence" a delight for the ears, while all of them are wrapped in sharp songwriting that make them much, much more than just quirky sing-alongs. Great songs with an interesting voice behind them wrapped in crisp and sparse production values make this an album deserving of a wide audience.
