I can't remember the first time I came across Trey Ratcliff's work, but I'm pretty confident it was via the web. Trey has done a tremendous job with his Twitter account, Facebook and his blog to interact with photographers, teach them his method of making stunning photographs, and inspire them to do get out there and shoot. When I heard he was coming out with a book I was very excited and he did not disappoint. As a visual learner I like how Trey's book is not heavy on the technical know how and more of a holistic approach to explaining his philosophy and work flow of taking good photographs. He also encourages photographers not to listen to all his rules and carve their own way. The stories behind his photos are captivating and he gives you just enough info on each for how he made each to make any photographer want to get out and figure out how to do it themselves. For those who haven't already read his HDR tutorial on his site, the last chapter in the book goes through more detailed steps on how to get going on making your own HDR photographs. I can personally say I'll be visiting his book time and time again whenever I need inspiration and this weekend I'll be heading out to try and take more HDR photos myself. I also encourage anyone who does enjoy the book to check out Trey online to take what the book offers and get a taste every day.

HDR is catching on, this is one of the best books explaining how to do it. The last few chapters are the tutorials but everything before that leads up to understanding what your trying to do. Highly recommend.

Trey Ratcliff wrote this book as a guide for those with an ambition to explore a new range of photography. It's perfect for a professional or an amateur, as his explanation never gets too general or too complicated. It can be witty and hilarious at times (I definitely laughed out loud a few times), and also touches on some philosophical aspects of everyday life and why we see the world exactly the way we see it. Just a couple pages into the book, I found myself grabbing a highlighter and pen, and I started taking notes on the pages. Not only was I writing down technical points about my photography, but also I was underlining things that made me realize why I love photography. The book is broken down quite simply, naturally starting with an introductory chapter. The three middle chapters contain an HDR image on every other page, and Ratcliff's notes go deeper into the photo, subject and technicalities as the chapters progress. HDR photography is the next generation of photography, and Ratcliff's tutorial in chapter 5 is simple yet extensive, allowing all the capability to practice the art. The 6th, and final chapter is a short description of all the technical tools necessary for successful HDR experiences. Even when you've exhausted all the knowledge possible from the book, it easily serves as a coffee table book with all the beautiful images in its pages. But I'm most likely find a photo friend and open them up to a new art. I definitely recommend this book for any type of photographer; aspiring, amateur or even professional.
