Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
With this A-to-Z resource, Nidel, a world music enthusiast, completes the enormously complicated task of summarizing and introducing world music. His is no lightweight, New Age, feel-good tome; instead, the book highlights music from 130 countries, along with the musicians most associated with those countries or parts of the world. Thus, one can easily trace a type of music, such as trance or high life, from its inception and discover the primary practitioners of the genre. The intent here is not to provide a complete discographical and biographical resource; guides by Penguin and Rough Guides already serve that purpose. In any case, Nidel's book does not suffer from the often confusing organization and poor searchability of Rough Guides. The text is utterly clear and concise, another great benefit, especially for those interested in, but not yet engulfed by, this music. Bottom Line To call this fantastic wealth of information and worldwide coverage "the basics" does not do it justice. All of the discussion about the countries, the types of music, the variety of instruments, and the musicians remains uncluttered but substantive enough to retain readers' attention. The suggested recordings should be relatively easy to locate, with few truly obscure CDs or labels. The glossary and bibliography direct readers to resources for further exploration. Highly recommended for all general reference and music collections. [World Music was first published in December 2004 but recalled when it was discovered that the last set of corrections had not been input. This represents a corrected reissue.-Ed.]-William G.
