Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The study of mythology does not suffer from a dearth of fine, scholarly reference books, but until now the general reader lacked a good, illustrated collection of the most important myths. In this fascinating and authoritative encyclopedia, scholarly contributors use more than 500 color photographs, maps, and artifacts to describe the myths of Egypt, the Middle East, India, China, Tibet, Mongolia, Japan, Greece, Rome, the Celtic lands, Northern and Eastern Europe, the Arctic, North and South America, Mesoamerica, Africa, Australia, Oceania, and Southeast Asia. An insightful foreword by Robert Walter of the Joseph Campbell Foundation adds further credibility to this oversized, colorful book. Recommended for the general reader and as an introduction for the student and scholar in any library.-- Gary P. Gillum, Brigham Young Univ., Provo, Ut.
Booknews
A reference book, made beautiful by careful page design and numerous illustrations. Editor Willis's introduction explores the great themes of myth. Subsequent chapters are devoted to 19 different countries or regions, the pictures affording casual browsers a stimulating variety of tones and flavors, while the text offers a sampling of the beliefs, main characters, and themes of each locale's mythology. Certainly a worthwhile and thoughtfully prepared compendium. We lament the use of paper with an odor (though all other paper characteristics seem fine); we've recently seen other books printed in China that don't have this problem. Annotation c. Superbly illustrated with over 500 color photos and illustrations, charts, and maps, this book includes the Middle Eastern epic, Gilgamesh; myths surrounding Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, & other Indian gods; tales from Taoist China; Maori and Polynesian myths; stories from the Arthurian cycle; more. 8 3/4" x 11".

I use this as a text for a college Intro to Mythology class, and absolutely love it! The book is divided into three major sections: Introduction to Myth, Great Themes of Myth (compares subjects common to most civilizations, including creation, origins of society, rebirth and renewal, and cosmic disasters) and World Mythography (discusses myths of various cultures, including Egypt, the Far East, Greece and Rome, Celtic and European, the Americas, Asia and Australia). I have yet to find a more comprehensive book. The only major myth missing is Judeo-Christian, although most Western culture students are quite familiar with the details of that one. This text is also useful for comparative purposes.
