Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amy S. Hansen
I love bugs and I love the pictures of bugs in this book. Guillain defines bugs fairly liberally, however she explains precisely what she means, which should calm the people who define the word more narrowly. Guillain says: "Bugs are small living things. They do not have backbones. There are different types of bugs. Some bugs are insects. Bees and butterflies are insects. Not all bugs are insects. Spiders, pill bugs, centipedes and worms are other types of bugs." Bugs are a part of most early elementary school curriculum and this beautiful book will be a boon to those early readers. They will read about how some bugs hatch looking like miniature adults while some start as larvae. They will read about the bugs' homes, their food, and how they move, and see life-size photos of six North American bugs. While the writing is a bit repetitive, it is appropriate for a beginning reader who is learning new words and new concepts at the same time. Backmatter includes a glossary, index, and a note to parents and teachers. Reviewer: Amy S. Hansen
