Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Shirley Nelson
A part of "The Olympics" series, this fact-filled volume introduces the young reader to the Olympics beginning with the details of the very first Olympic Games and ending with a nod to future hosts of the Games. Fourteen countries participated in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, but of the 245 athletes, all were male. Today over 200 countries participate and as many as half of the athletes are female. Olympic achievements, as well as controversies, are briefly mentioned. The flame, flag, and motto, the three main symbols of the Games, are explained. This book provides a general overview of the Olympics through the years. Brightly colored fact boxes and color photographs along with charts and maps give a brief view of the Olympics through the years. Words appearing in bold print are defined in the glossary. A list of books and websites for further information and an index are included. Reviewer: Shirley Nelson
