Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Winner of the Times Educational Supplement Information Book Award, this book is a splendid introduction to Shakespeare, his world, and his works. The text is lively and interesting. The layout is appealing with many pictures of actors playing various Shakespearean roles, woodcuts, and other drawings. Included also are informative large pictures of a London street and the theater in Shakespeare's time with details highlighted in brief text notes. The book includes a list of 35 Shakespeare-related Web sites that can be accessed from the Usborne Web site. Material from the site is downloadable for personal use. This thorough book even includes a note about protection from viruses and cautions readers to obtain parental permission to access the Internet or to give identifying information. The book also notes that its information stands alone as a reference work and access to a computer is not necessary. The publisher's Web site mentions the usefulness of this book for homeschoolers. It should prove equally valuable to teachers or to students eager to read about Shakespeare on their own. The book is not only a pleasure to read, it is a handy reference that includes plots of Shakespeare's plays, important names in the world of Shakespeare, glossaries of terms, phrases, Shakespearean words, and Shakespearean characters, important dates, Web sites, an index, acknowledgements for the illustrations, and so much more. 2001, Usborne Publishing/EDC Publishing,
