Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
Golden (Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Ascension, 2011, etc.), who has also previously written novels set in the Star Trek, Star Wars and Starcraft II universes, returns with another World of Warcraft entry. Set in Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft massive multiplayer online role-playing game world, this novel largely follows Lady Jaina Proudmoore, a human sorceress and the leader of the city of Theramore. As the novel opens, it is discovered that the Focusing Iris, an ancient magical artifact, has been stolen from the blue dragons by unknown enemies. The leader of the dragons, Kalecgos, in his humanoid form, approaches Jaina to help recover it, claiming that nothing less than the fate of the world of Azeroth is at stake. Meanwhile, the orc Garrosh Hellscream, leader of the Horde, has a plan to attack the Alliance and specifically, to target Theramore as an early step in an all-out war of conquest. Jaina gathers allies to aid in her city's defense, but Garrosh has a horrific surprise planned that will change everything. The novel, as part of a long-running fantasy series, assumes some back story knowledge on the reader's part, but attentive newcomers should have relatively few problems getting their bearings. Though the prose style tends toward the verbose at times, and some names (Bloodhoof, Sparkshine, a battle-ax named Gorehowl) may be distracting to the uninitiated, the plot and action are straightforward. The grand and sweeping battle sequences in particular--featuring rampaging molten giants made of rock, a wide range of other creatures and plenty of magic--will likely satisfy World of Warcraft newbies and aficionados alike. A well-crafted installment in the World of Warcraft saga.

Highly recommended for current expansion World of Warcraft players

Good book that shares some much needed lore for the current expansion of world of warcraft. Some things that were way to under explained in the book.

    Death of a dream

As the title suggests, "Tides of war" is a character driven story framed in a world of simmering conflict that violently boils over into an all out bloody and horrific conflict.

A tableau of fun, memorable, and lovable characters weave a tapestry of hope, determination, and tragedy amidst the escalation and building tension to the terrible cathartic breaking point.

Though much of the story's context is dependent on previous books as well as the game's setting the author does a good job of filling in the blanks. Jaina Proudmore is a must read for any Warcraft fan and a fun diversion for those who are not.

A Fantastic treasure trove of lore

This was a fantastic and emotional read. Introducing the reader to the lore directly after Cataclysm and right up until Mists of Pandaria, this book is very in depth. Centered on Jaina's point of view you learn so much about the characters you see wandering in WoW. The Fall of Theramore Scenario gives almost no information but it can all be found in the book. This book is a must read for anyone who cares what is going on and where we are heading with the new expansion. Very well written, a lot of action, and lot of emotion.

Not as good as previous efforts by this author in this series.

Not as good as previous efforts by this author in this series. I think we're getting to a point where background information and how it's delivered is starting to be a hindrance to the story. We have characters that have been featured heavily in other novels in the series. They end up in a situation that reminds them of something that happened to them in a past novel. So we get a page or two used to describe what happened in a previous book. That's all fine, and I can see it being useful if your concern is people new to the series just picking up one book and not knowing previous events. But I think it needs some balance. At this point, you can look at a character list for the story and know what flashbacks you're going to get. Oh, it's that blue dragon fellow again. Guess we're going to hear about his lost loved one again. Also, I think this is the first time we've gotten flashbacks of the same event from multiple sources. If it's two characters on different sides of a battle, okay. When it's two characters sharing tea, it may not be necessary.

Also, one of my main complaints with the other writer in this series has been when he's done something in his stories that doesn't work in the rest of the media. It's always felt like the other guy is telling the story he wants to, regardless of how well that story would actually fit into the established setting. Golden's been really good about the story being accurate to the setting. And then the ending of this book happened. Where, to extend a battle sequence, the villains receive unexpected back up. Unexpected in a totally unexplianed, "this happens just deal with it" kind of way. Come on, don't do that. You're better than that.
