Now, on the legendary continent of Pandaria, he will stand trial for his transgressions.

Renowned leaders from across the world have gathered to witness this historic event. As the trial unfolds, agents of the bronze dragonflight present shocking visions of Garrosh's atrocities. For many of those in attendance, these glimpses into history force them to relive painful memories and even question their own innocence or guilt. For others, the chilling details stoke the flames of their hatred.

Unbeknownst to anyone, shadowy forces are at work on Azeroth, threatening not only the court's ability to mete out justice…but also the lives of everyone at the trial.

From Barnes & Noble

The siege of Orgrimmar is finally over and Garrosh Hellscream must now stand trial for his treachery and all his ghastly atrocities. Yearning for some closure, numerous survivors of his crime attend the proceedings, gnashing their teeth as the court recount Garrosh's reign of terror. None of these former victims or family members knows, however, that plots are afoot to wreck all plans of justice and perhaps annihilate them as well.

    Excellent!

As an avid player of WoW and someone who follows the lore with keen interest, I found this book to be both enjoyable and captivating. To see the leaders of the various races that we have all come to love interacting together, reacting to past situations together and sometimes plotting together was nothing short of magnificent. I fully enjoyed this book and look forward with much anticipation the next story in this wonderful universe!

I hope their next major book continues along this path.

When I reviewed the last novel set in the Warcraft universe, I commented on how Blizzard was facing a no win situation. They needed to find a way to balance dealing with major events in both their game and their tie in media. If you only put major events in books, your player base may be upset that they're not involved in those events. If you only put major events in your game, then there may not be a good enough reason to pick up the latest book.

War Crimes is a good solution to this problem. It deals with an important event within the setting via a criminal trial. And while some very interesting video games have been made that allow people to play as a lawyer, that's never been something Warcraft has been known for. So the book doesn't take away content that a player could be involved in otherwise.

For the story itself, much of it is copied from previous novels in the franchise. I don't know if it's literally cut and pasted from those books. I think the author does a good enough job of breaking up those scenes with character reactions and pauses for questions to be asked. I remembered reading many of the scenes before, but I never felt like I should skip ahead because I knew what was going on. But the book doesn't spend all of its time in reliving the past. There are some nice subplots going on. And it's not a Warcraft novel without at least one major fight occurring.

I hope their next major book continues along this path.

    Good until the end

I got this hoping for a deeper look into the characters of the faction leaders and their affiliates. Which this provided, especially with Baine and the Windrunner sisters. Unfortunately, the author dropped the ball towards the end through a predictable plot twist (even if you know nothing about the upcoming game expansion), turning what could have been a complicated character into a stereotypical villain, canceling a tragic ending that would have given the story of the expansion more material, and wrapping up everything with your standard happy ending and a heavy-handed epilogue.

Regardless, the story is a good read and in my opinion, it's the best Warcraft novel written so far. Four stars.

    Good read!

A really good read. I hope that blizzard decides to tie the trial into in-game events pre-expansion release. That being said, Christie Golden delivers a great story and interpretation of events from the past and present. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Warcraft lore, you will not be disappointed.
