World Press Photo is a nonprofit organization founded in the Netherlands to "support and promote internationally the work of professional press photographers." A jury meets to choose the winners of an annual press photography contest, and these are published in a book (this one for 2000) as well as being displayed in a traveling exhibition "visited by over a million people in 35 countries every year." The 186 photographs here were selected from 42,215 entries submitted by 3,981 photographers from 122 countries. The selection is an achievement in and of itself. The book of photographs is divided into various categories such as portraits, nature and the environment, people in the news, daily life, general news. Almost all are in b/w, yet there are some in full color. As often as Pope John Paul II has been photographed, it seems astounding that there is one image here that works as a magnet to bring your eyes to it: a press photograph that could be an icon. Not only is this a fascinating look at our world, and the major events in it (there are many Kosovo photographs, for instance, in this volume), it is a chance to see what are considered to be the best photographs. Surely student photographers would be interested in that judgment, even to disagree.
