Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
It is the summer of 1914. You are young, with your whole life ahead of you. Suddenly, world events take a turn for the worst. Austria's Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie are shot dead in Sarajevo by Bosnian Serbs. Soon, countries across Europe are taking sides. Chapter one sets the stage for this interactive book about World War I, and each chapter that follows takes you down one of three very different paths. Follow one storyline and you are a young Belgian woman training to be a nurse. The Germans are threatening to invade. Will you stay in Brussels and continue training or leave for the countryside? Each answer leads to different consequences, some ending well and others in death. Another story brings you the world of a young British lad, choosing between joining the cavalry or the infantry. The third vignette asks the reader to imagine being a young American choosing whether to stay in college or volunteer to go to France with the American Field Service. The book is well-written, and the text is engaging without being overwhelming. Actual photos from the war, along with input from knowledgeable consultant Timothy Solie (Adjunct Professor of History, Minnesota State University, Mankato) ensure the historical accuracy of this text, one of fourteen in the "You Choose" series. The book includes a timeline, a list of Internet sites, a glossary, a bibliography, and a basic index. While the story is engaging, the plethora of choices can be confusing at times. Backtracking through the decisions to reach the last point of departure can be time-consuming, as well as bothersome. Color coding the chapters might solve this slight issue in an otherwise highly accessible historical text. Reviewer: Kris Sauer
