Children's LiteratureAGERANGE: Ages 10 up.
World War II remains the most costly conflict in human history. During the years 1939-1945 over fifty million human beings lost their lives in a war that left virtually no continent unscathed. Armies from dozens of nations struggled in a conflict that pitted some of the most horrendous dictatorships ever construed against not only democratic nations but themselves as well. On the European Eastern Front, the ferocity of the clash between German and Soviet forces was virtually unparalleled in recorded history. In the Pacific Theater of Operations, a vicious war was waged between the Allies and the military forces of Imperial Japan. This monumental conflict is the topic of this title in the "Timelines" series. In this slim book Nathaniel Harris attempts to encapsulate a struggle that quite literally encompassed the entire globe. In taking on this challenge Harris is to be commended; his work does stand up as a resource. Combining a tightly written but comprehensive text with plentiful illustrations, World War II is a fine introduction to a conflict that shaped the course of history that remains imprinted on the modern world.
