Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Krisan Murphy
Monuments of all shapes, sizes, and substances are created as a reminder to the observer. Outstanding photographs of ten amazing monuments are contained in this book which is one in a series of "Top Ten Landmarks." Among the monuments are carvings and resemblances of men, as well as mammoth structures of unfamiliar images like the Moai on Easter Island and the Great Sphinx of Giza. In Black Hills, Wyoming, the Devil's Tower, which President Theodore Roosevelt declared as the country's first national monument, is the focus of a legend about a rock which once saved some girls from an attacking bear. War monuments included in this book are the Brandenburg Gate, The Motherland, and the Great Ocean Road. Some monuments, readers learn, are endangered because of political or religious battles, such as the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddha in Afghanistan. Throughout the book, words are highlighted in bold for further definition in the glossary. A handy index is included, as well as a page of online and book resources for further study of this fascinating subject. Reviewer: Krisan Murphy
