Children's Literature - Krisan Murphy
Pyramids, which were either tombs of powerful kings or places of human sacrifice, can be found in Egypt, Mexico, China, France, and Guatemala. This nonfiction book is part of the series "Top Ten Landmarks" around the world. Photographs of the remains of the towering, most often triangular, pyramids are impressive. The Pyramid of Kukulcan, built by the Mayans, is an extremely calculated calendar with 365 steps. Egypt's Djoser's Pyramid is thought to be the oldest pyramid and built by King Djsoer out of stone blocks so that his tomb would last. Cultural beliefs and practices are uncovered in the remains of these pyramids, as seen in the articles of food, furniture, treasures, and even pets which were buried in these great buildings. Surprisingly, China is the location of thirty-eight pyramids, including the Maoling Mausoleum which is 153 feet high and took more than a half century to construct. Throughout the book, words are highlighted in bold for further definition in the glossary. A handy index is included as well as a page of book and online resources for further study of this fascinating subject. Reviewer: Krisan Murphy
