Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Welsh
In this installment of the "Landmark Top Tens" series, readers are introduced to the must-see skyscrapers of the world. You are invited to take a trip around the world without leaving your seat! Your travels begin in China and include a tour of skyscrapers in New York City, Australia, Malaysia, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, Chicago, and Russia. You will see that no two skyscrapers are created equal. See the New York City skyline glimmer like gold, the Jim Mao Tower in Shanghai shimmer like silver, and the Willis Tower in Chicago seem to pause in princely purple as the sun goes down. The pagoda-like Taipei in Taiwan and the Rubik's Cube shape of the City of Capitals skyscraper in Moscow bring a unique contrast to the multitude of needle-like skyscrapers. Large, colorful photographs accompany the text. The photos take up more space than the text, which will encourage struggling and reluctant readers to read independently. Other highly visual and helpful nonfiction text features include statistics boxes for each skyscraper, maps, fun fact bubbles, and an index. There is a two-page diagram depicting the height of the skyscrapers in the back of the book. The vocabulary is appropriate for third- or fourth-graders, and more challenging words are in bold throughout the text so that readers may look them up in the glossary. Companion book titles and websites are provided in the back of the book for readers wishing to further explore skyscrapers and make connections to their learning. Reviewer: Heather Welsh
