Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Rounds
This book, one of the "The World's Top 10s" series, consists of an introductory page about the special efforts people may make to survive perilous situations. Then it briefly presents the stories of the "top ten" survivors of terrible accidents, starting with the least gruesome and counting down. What makes a really extreme survival story worthy of the top ten list? If the survivor had to cut off a body part, eat insects (or resort to cannibalism), then that would probably cause it to merit inclusion in this book. Each survivor receives a double-page spread, with one or two color photographs and three or four paragraphs of text on brightly colored pages. The survivors also each have an information box with their photos that includes a few facts about their story (how much weight was lost is mentioned more than once). The book includes a table of contents, an index, a short list of other recommended titles, a link to Internet resources through the publisher, and a glossary. Although not an essential purchase for most libraries, the topic may attract reluctant readers who will enjoy an exciting (or especially horrific) survival tale. Reviewer: Leslie Rounds
