World's Strangest Automobiles: A Collection of Weird and Wonderful Driving Machinesby Adrienne Kessel
It is to such visionaries as Karl Benz that we owe the modern car in all its forms, utilitarian or frivolous, who were able to recognize that a glorious future lay in motorized transport. They also had the technical ability and imagination to realize the automobile's potential flexibility over the train. Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach were among others of this illustrious breed - they had their dreams and meant to realize them; but how strange these early motorized carriages must have seemed. For every enlightened soul who recognized their potential, who appreciated just how much technical expertise and sheer hard work had gone into their development, there must have been hundreds who laughed, shook their heads and confided to their friends that it would 'never catch on'. It certainly did, and in so many wonderful and varied guises.
