Verve Records has purchased the rights to reissue vocalist Melody Gardot's debut recording, which came out in 2006. Two years after suffering a near fatal automobile accident, the differently able Gardot triumphed in accomplishing what many others, including her, could only dream of. This project has her singing and playing guitar and a little piano, but more so presenting this project of all original material. Gardot has an interesting personal story, but even more intriguing music that straddles the line between lounge jazz, folk, and cowgirl songs. She's part sophisticated chanteuse, college sophomore, and down-home girl next door. Her innocence, sweetness, and light are very alluring, much like the persona of tragic songbirds Eva Cassidy and Nancy LaMott. Feel empathy for Gardot, but don't patronize her -- she's the real deal much more that many of her over-hyped peers. "Quiet Fire" is definitely her signature tune, as it speaks volumes of where her soul is at, in a jazz/blues mode, yearning for true love. The title track follows a similar tack, a slow, sweet, sentimental slinky blues that will melt your heart. A finger-snapping "Goodnite" leaves you wanting that night to continue, but also exudes a hope that permeates the entire recording. She might be a bit down on men during the nonplussed "All That I Need Is Love," but her subdued optimism glows cool. "Sweet Memory" might possibly parallel Feist or perhaps KT Tunstall in a rural country mode, while "Gone" is clearly folkish, and the slow "Some Lessons" expresses a contemporary Nashville precept. The laid-back music behind Gardot is basically acoustic, incorporating hip jazz instrumentation, especially the trumpet of Patrick Hughes and occasional organ, Wurlitzer, or Fender Rhodes from Joel Bryant, but with twists including violin, lap steel, and Dobro. Clocking in at a scant 33 minutes, the concise nature of this recording and these tunes perfectly reflects the realization that life is precious, every moment counts, and satisfaction is fleeting. Likely to be placed in the Norah Jones/Nellie McKay/Madeleine Peyroux pseudo jazz/pop sweepstakes, Gardot offers something decidedly more authentic and genuine. She's one-upped them all out of the gate.

    New Find -- Love It

She has her own sound, but reminds me of D Krall. I will look for all her new music in the future. One of my favorites.

    Move over Nora Jones

This CD was recommended to me by the person at Barnes and Noble store. She said if you like Nora Jones, you will like this one. Wow, was she right. I love this CD. Nice atmosphere music, while you are working or just relaxing.

    A Gem, a diamond, a pearl...

Having discovered this remarkable talent on a local Philadelphia radio station, I could not stop thinking about the depth and beauty of her original music. Later, I learned that personal tragedy has, in some ways, shaped her music. I await her next move and plan to see her in concert.

    A great find @ B &amp B breakfast!

Recently while enjoying a great B&amp B breakfast, we were treated to this CD playing ever so quietly in the background, but effective enough to make me stop and find out who was the smooth voice coming from the other room. A perfect match to compliment an early morning gathering around a breakfast table. A great way to start the day.

    Amazing

I'm not a jazz lover, at least not a true one. I love Melody Gardot. Watch out Norah Jones, you've got company, and this gal carries a cane.

    Buy this Album

Anyone trully interested in a great new jazz singer will not want to miss this album. I have had the pleasure of listening to Melody Gardot twice, live at the World Cafe and she is even better in person. Her lyrics stand out as well as her voice. I suggest you get more then one copy of this album. You are going to want to share it with anyone who is looking for a soulful jazz filled out of the ordinary voice. I can't wait for the next album. I purchased the albums at the concerts for $15.00 and worth every penny.

    AMAZING

Melody is a truly inspirational artist who is worthy of much more. I have not heard anything this original in a long time. Check out the track "Love Me Like A River". Jazz Lovers will not be disappointed.
