Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

An insane activist is on the loose and Detective Michael Bennett is determined to stop him. One by one, the sons and daughters of wealthy families are being kidnapped, but the twisted culprit doesn't want ransoms; he wants answers. Each hostage faces the ultimate jeopardy quiz: If he answers the questions about economic inequality right he lives; if not, he faces instant extinction. Bennett, the father of ten children himself, tackles this case with exceptional earnestness, but things grow more complicated when the FBI, in the person of attractive Agent Emily Park, becomes involved. James Patterson's third Michael Bennett novel bristles with plot tension; now in mass market paperback and NOOKbook.

Publishers Weekly
New York detective Michael Bennett is an ace profiler who enjoys working alone, and when a beautiful young FBI abduction specialist named Emily Parker is assigned to his high-profile kidnapping case, he struggles to cede authority. Bobby Cannavale returns as Detective Bennett, slipping into his best Brooklyn accent and giving a hard edge to the character. As the kidnapper, John Glover employs a nasal whining tone perfectly suited to the character, and the phone conversations between cop and criminal are rich with tension. Orlagh Cassidy gives Emily an appealing gentleness, but her other female characters sound slightly clichéd. A Little, Brown hardcover. (Feb.)

Meet the Author

James Patterson
James Patterson
Not making any bones about his bid for success, James Patterson once declared he wanted to be known as “the king of the page-turners.” While that may seem like a pretty grand ambition, Patterson is as worthy of that title as any author working today.

Biography

James Patterson had been working as a very successful advertising copywriter when he decided to put his Masters degree in English to a somewhat different use. Inspired by bestselling hair-raising thrillers like The Day of the Jackal and The Exorcist, Patterson went to work on his first novel. Published in 1976, The Thomas Berryman Number established him as a writer of tightly constructed mysteries that move forward with the velocity of a bullet. For his startling debut, Patterson was awarded the prestigious Edgar Award for Best First Mystery Novel—an auspicious beginning to one of the most successful careers in publishing.

A string of gripping standalone mysteries followed, but it was the 1992 release of Along Came a Spider that elevated Patterson to superstar status. Introducing Alex Cross, a brilliant black police detective/forensic psychologist, the novel was the first installment in a series of bestselling thrillers that has proved to be a cash cow for the author and his publisher.

Examining Patterson's track record, it's obvious that he believes one good series deserves another…maybe even a third! In 2001, he debuted the Women's Murder Club with 1st to Die, a fast-paced thriller featuring four female crime fighters living in San Francisco—a homicide detective, a medical examiner, an assistant D.A., and a cub reporter. The successful series has continued with other numerically titled installments. Then, spinning off a set of characters from a previous novel (1998's When the Wind Blows), in 2005 he published Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment. Featuring a "flock" of genetically engineered flying children, the novel was a huge hit, especially with teen readers, and spawned a series of vastly popular fantasy adventures.

In addition to continuing his bestselling literary franchises, Patterson has also found time to co-author thrillers with other writers—including Peter de Jonge, Andrew Gross, Maxine Paetro, and Howard Roughan—and has even ventured into romance (Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas, Sam's Letters to Jennifer) and children's literature (santaKid). Writing at an astonishing pace, this prolific author has turned himself into a one-man publishing juggernaut, fulfilling his clearly stated ambition to become "the king of the page-turners."

Good To Know

Patterson's Suzanne's Diary For Nicholas was inspired by a diary his wife kept that tracked the development of their toddler son.

Two of Patterson's Alex Cross mysteries (Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls) have been turned into films starring Morgan Freeman; in 2007, a weekly television series premiered, based on the bestselling Women's Murder Club novels.

Prologue

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE… OR ELSE

One

THE STOCKY MAN with the salt-and-pepper hair felt light-headed as he crossed beneath the marble arch into Washington Square Park. He dropped his backpack, took off his circular glasses, and blotted the sudden tears in his eyes with the sleeve of his ancient jeans jacket.

He hadn’t planned on breaking down, but My God, he thought, wiping at his rugged, lined face. Now he knew how Vietnam veterans felt when they visited their Wall down in Washington, DC. If veterans of the antiwar movement had a monument—a Wall of Tears—it was here, where it all began, Washington Square Park.

Staring out over the windy park, he remembered all the incredible things that had occurred here. The antiwar demonstrations. Bob Dylan in the 4th Street basement clubs, singing about which way the wind was blowing. The candlelit faces of his old friends as they passed bottles and smoke. The whispered promises they had made to one another to change things, to make things better.

He looked out over the Friday-afternoon crowd by the center fountain, the people hovering over the chess tables, as if he might find a familiar face. But that was impossible, wasn’t it? he thought with a shrug. They’d all moved on, like he had. Grown up. Sold out. Or were underground. Figuratively. Literally.

That time, his time, was almost completely faded now, just about dead and gone.

Just about, he thought as he knelt and removed the box of flyers from his knapsack.

But not quite.

On each of the five hundred sheets was a three-paragraph message entitled LOVE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD.

Who says you can’t go home? he thought. A quote from Keith Richards popped into his head as he stacked the sheets.

“I got news for you. We’re still a bunch of tough bastards. String us up and we still won’t die.”

You said it, Keith, he thought, giggling to himself. Right on, brother. You and me both.

More and more over the last year, his thoughts kept coming back to his youth. It was the only time in his entire life when he’d felt like he meant something, when he’d felt he was making a positive difference.

Was coming back now after all this time a midlife crisis? Maybe. He didn’t care. He’d decided he wanted that feeling again. Especially in light of recent events. The world now was in even more dire straits than the one he and his friends had fought to affect. It was time to do it again. Wake people up before it was too late.

That’s why he was here. It had worked once. They had, after all, stopped a war. Maybe it could happen again. Even if he was a lot older, he wasn’t dead yet. Not by any means.

He licked his thumb and took the first sheet from the stack. He smiled, remembering the countless flyers he’d handed out in Berkeley and Seattle, and in Chicago in ’68. After all this time, here he was. Unbelievable. What a crazy life. Back in the saddle again.

Patterson & Michael Bennett deliver another satisfying, action-packed thriller!

Michael Bennett, the lead detective from James Patterson's recent Run For Your Life, is back in this equally fast-paced and absorbing thriller. In Worst Case, Michael Bennett faces another serial killer with a "larger message." While Bennett's last opponent, The Teacher, had sought to punish the rudeness of wealthy New Yorkers, this new killer targets the children of wealthy with a hidden message. As this new criminal holds New York City hostage, Michael Bennett works closely with a beautiful FBI counterpart and Abduction Specialist, Agent Emily Parker. NYC's large resources are at their disposal, but absent demands from the kidnapper/killer, can Bennett and Parker find a way to save innocent, young lives?

Worst Case brings back James Patterson's latest detective Michael Bennett and it doesn't disappoint. Michael Bennett is as witty, good humored and sharp as ever. The interaction between Bennett and Agent Emily Parker works well; they're effective partners with some underlying romantic tension. In Worst Case, Patterson delivers another satisfying, action-packed thriller. I look forward to the next installment in the Michael Bennett series.

    Getting Stale

It seems lately all of James Patterson books are the same and predictable. As for the previous post how can you read a book one month before it comes out. I'm judging all last year's Patterson's books and the preview from Worst Case.

    Pricing is ridiculous!

Price wasn't the only reason I bought the NOOK; however, it was one of them. I liked the idea of getting new books immediately less expensively than buying them. At this price, I could easily go Sam's and buy.

    Really Like the New Character

I am a partial Patterson fan, I say partial because I like most of his books including the partnerships, with the exception of the Ladies Detective Series but I stray from the topic at hand. His new character Bennett, is an engaging and complex one, makes the audio book a fun listen. The audio-reader brings a unique life to the written word, the back story gives you a peak into a history you always want more of. the Main plot is exciting, fast paced in the style we expect from Patterson. In short I liked the audiobook and recommend you slip a disk into your CD player, Computer or download to your MP3 player, you wont' regret it.

Too Few Words and Too Little Depth for the Price

I have been pulled into the world of Mike Bennett because I like the character; however, I am still waiting for his world to become something greater. Now on the third book, portions of the story, whether the foreground or the background, it does not matter, still seem too contrived. The effort has not been put into making this series one which will be long-remembered once it is out of print. For the price of a hardback, I must say that I was very disappointed to see so few words placed on the pages and to realize that Mike is truly at the mercy of money-makers instead of authors. I challenge the writers to do something more for Mike Bennett and for the readership. Prove this critic wrong.

    Another quick read

I have read all of Patterson's murder stories. Some better than others, but they are always a quick read. I can never put them down, cannot wait for the conclusion. This one in particular was one of his better ones.

    Advantage of Membership card

When buying a book where do u see the advantage of paying $25 for a discount on the price of the books. Also, why are so many of the books priced so high. I agree eith ghe person who said the could get it from Sam's. The prices make you think about returninb the color nook, canceling trial membersnip snd getting books cheaper from Sam's or this website I know.

    Typical James Patterson

Fast and easy read with nice action flow to the predictable ending. I bought it (too expensive) because I wanted to test-read something easy on my home desktop PC screen. It was better than expected. Over my budget this month already so my next purchase will have to wait. I'll try one of the freebie books this week. Cannot afford a Nook; that's the cost of a year's worth of books.

    Page Turner

A disturbing crime with few leads is the basis for this fast-paced thriller by fan favorite James Patterson and new writing partner Michael Ledwidge. The son of a wealthy, New York family has been abducted, but this is no ordinary case where ransom demands are only a phone call away. It's a final exam where the answers mean everything and only the worthy students survive.
Detective Michael Bennett has a lot on his plate. As a widowed father of ten rambunctious kids and carrying a full caseload, the newest investigation on his radar is hitting extremely close to home. When another student disappears and the FBI sends in their top specialist, Bennett swallows his NYPD pride and forms a fast friendship with this attractive agent.
Blindly following the lead of this criminal sends the authorities into dangerous and unexpected locales, the neighborhoods abandoned by the wealthy and affluent. As the pace quickens the criminal's deeper agenda soon begins to surface.
With the introduction of a surefire star to the mystery scene in Detective Michael Bennett, "Worst Case" is a definite page-turner not to be missed.
