I have lived in Northern California all my life. I remember the first championships of the A's, Warriors, Raiders and Forty Niners. The Giants World Series win tops them all. I have the SI book, two videos and a copy of the nomination for SI Sportsman of the Year by Tom Verducci, which brought a tear to my eye. Worth The Wait is the best so far. The book is written by author and radio host from the SF Giants flagship station KNBR Brian Murphy. The photos were taken by Brad Mangin. There is a foreword by closer Brian Wilson, the preface by the author and photographer and an introduction by the beloved Giants TV announcers Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper. They help capture the spirit of the team, the city, in a torturous season, as they fought their way to a championship. On the one hand, what makes this a great book are the pictures. I flipped through the whole book before I read anything. I found the photos to be visually stunning. From the picture of Willie McCovey's statue on the page facing the preface, to the incredible stride Tim Lincecum takes with each pitch, to the shots of the 1958 inaugural team and all the Giants Hall of Famers, I was taken aback by the beauty of it all. If this book had been nothing but photos, it would have been a success. But it is so much more. On the other hand, what is great about this book is that it covers the whole season in 7 chapters and 128 pages, with the ending parade titled Afterglow. There is a one page player profile at the end of each chapter about Audrey Huff, Andres Torres, Buster Posey, Jonathan Sanchez, Matt Cain, Cody Ross and Tim Lincecum. At no time do you feel like you have to read the whole book cover to cover in one sitting. It is easy to sit down and read a few pages, coming back to the rest when you have more time. This made reading Worth the Wait far from a chore. Worth the Wait is a must have for anyone who loves baseball, miraculous seasons or the San Francisco Giants.
