Description: This is a comprehensive, evidence-based book of clinical guidelines for the assessment and management of common and less common wounds. It also covers wounds related to other diseases and how to manage them. This fourth edition includes updated and expanded information, making it a necessary revision.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a guide to assessment and management for wound care. It also covers pain management and the legal aspects of wound care. The objectives are worthy as over two million people worldwide have wounds, many of them chronic, and this number is growing.
Audience: The audience includes RNs, LPNs, physical therapists, MDs, podiatrists, and any other caregivers who have the responsibility of treating both acute and chronic wounds. Of course, it also can be helpful for nursing students and novice to expert RNs taking care of patients with wounds. The authors are well-known wound care specialist RNs, but the book also has a panel of experts.
Features: This book covers every type of wound, from acute to chronic and simple to exotic, and all aspects of patient care. It covers pain management, as well as legal aspects and financial concerns. The best aspect of the book is how comprehensive it is. It discusses ethical issues, psychological issues, and social aspects of wounds, as well as prevention and age-specific issues. Some of the unique features are the excellent color illustrations and the discussions of quality of life issues and self management of wounds. The scenarios are very helpful assess understanding.
Assessment: This is the most complete guide to wound care, covering not only the clinical aspects but also all of the life issues that come along with wounds. The color illustrations are very helpful in depicting the characteristics of different types of wounds. The book also discusses other conditions related to wounds, a correlation that is significant in caring for wound patients. It surpasses Acute and Chronic Wounds: Current Management Concepts, 5th edition, Bryant and Nix (Elsevier, 2016), in its comprehensiveness.

Description:This book covers basic wound care principles and than specifically focuses on different types of wounds. This update was necessary because of the rapid changes in wound care and the increase in the number of complex and chronic wounds.
Purpose:The foreword, written by Kathryn Baxter, RN, FNP, refers to the book as an impressive reference for beginning and experienced practitioners. Topics include anatomy and physiology of normal skin development and causes of acute and chronic wounds. Specific treatments are discussed for each wound. The objectives are worthwhile and wound management is within the realm of nursing care and management.
Audience:This is written for beginning and advanced practitioners. It is also a good reference for other healthcare professionals, either occupational or physical therapists, who work with clients with all stages of wound care.
Features:The first three chapters cover wound care fundamentals, wound assessment, and basic wound care procedures, all basic areas nurses need to know to begin care for clients. Chapters 4 thru 8 cover specific types of wounds and the remaining chapters address wound care products, therapeutic modalities, and legal and reimbursement issues. The appendix presents algorithms dealing with pressure ulcers and wound assessment. The foreword mentions evidence-based wound care, but there are no references. All the areas are covered in sufficient detail to serve as a quick reference. More in-depth information can be found in more detailed publications.
Assessment:This is a good review and quick reference for practicing nurses and students. The material is what healthcare professionals need to know and the information is presented clearly along with numerous visual examples. I would recommend this as a staple on medical-surgical units.
