Overview

The prince of merengue's bass-driven bomba sound returns with a slew of fresh hits and a slick new look on Wow! Flash. Elvis Crespo takes all the chart-topping muscle of Suavemente to the next level with his hot horn hits, infectious dance appeal, and a pan-Latino pop aesthetic that makes the album his most colorful to date. Where his sophomore effort Pintame failed to capitalize on mainstream mania for Latin sounds, Crespo works both sides of the bilingual fence on the hard-thumping, dance-floor-rocking merengue title track. His whispery, lovelorn crooning on "No Me Olvidarás" and "Solos Tu y Yo," on the other hand, reveal his penchant for Air Supply-style balladry. Indeed, Crespo's romantic bids are boundless: "Me Mata" tells of a love so sweet it kills, romping along to Freddy Méndez's oversized bass lines and quirky little snatches of Arabic kitsch; flowers and trinkets are no match for the gift of love on "El Regalito"; "Cuando Me Entrego al Amor" (When I Give Myself to Love) ventures into down-tempo salsa territory with accordion flourishes reminiscent of Juan Luis Guerra. The Joe Arroyo hit "Otra Noche" picks up some hot flamenco guitar licks, while "Mares de Emoción" makes a Santo Domingo-Rio connection with a flicker of festive samba drumming. Now say it all together: Wow Flash!
