WOW Gold

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
Christian music is the industry's fastest-growing genre, and this retrospective of the past three decades shows why. The latest edition in the extremely successful WOW franchise, GOLD puts some of the biggest Christian songs and artists onto a double CD that is a must for any serious collector. As this scene is still rather new, with roots in the Jesus movement of the late '60s and early '70s, WOW GOLD is more than a compilation, it's a comprehensive history of the genre.
Early pioneers Larry Norman, Keith Green, and 2nd Chapter of Acts share disc space with modern hit-makers Jars of Clay, Amy Grant, and Michael W. Smith. Although Sixpence None the Richer is notable in their absence -- one imagines record label politics were the factor there -- virtually every other major name is featured. Better still, WOW GOLD complements the requisite signature hits Smith's "Friends," Avalon's "Testify to Love," with some lesser-known gems. Including Amy Grant's "Thy Word," a song from her 1984 STRAIGHT AHEAD release, and dc Talk's "What If I Stumble" instead of the better-known "Jesus Freak" adds an element of freshness to this musical history lesson. School never sounded so good.
All Music Guide - Steve Huey
Spanning the '70s through the '90s, WOW Gold styles itself as a compact history of contemporary Christian music CCM, seeking not to define, but to sum up the genre, and showcase the range of music it encompasses in the process. One CCM star after another parades across the compilation's two discs; the only flaw is that they aren't always represented by their best-known or most popular songs. Some choices are no-brainers: Rich Mullins' "Awesome God," Stryper's "To Hell With the Devil," or Bob Carlisle's "Butterfly Kisses," for example. But others might bemoan the selection of DC Talk's "What If I Stumble?" over "Jesus Freak," or Michael W. Smith's "Friends" over the pop Top Ten hit "Place in This World." But even if it isn't, ultimately, a one-stop best-of-CCM collection, WOW Gold does achieve its aim of displaying the variety and quality of the best contemporary Christian music.
