The Federal Writers Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was created by the federal government during the Great Depression to put thousands of unemployed writers to work.

Norman K. Risjord, professor emeritus of history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is author of Wisconsin: The Story of the Badger State, A Popular History of Minnesota (MHS Press), and Shining Big Sea Water (MHS Press).
