Grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors are commonplace, even in published communications like web pages and signs. An easy-to-use handbook would help many of us, not just middle school students, to be better writers. Unlike the hilarious Eats, Shoots & Leaves that only deals with misplaced or missing commas, this desktop reference covers the more common errors involving misspelled words, misused punctuation and missing grammar in short, easily understood sections. Starting with grammar, the book gives examples of both right and wrong usage, allowing readers to see and hear the correct way and also see the confusion than can arise with the wrong treatment. Many of us understand correct grammar rules without thinking about them too much, partly because we are readers, but grammar is not emphasized as much in school as it used to be and there are many children and young adults who are unfamiliar with the parts of speech and how they are used. In addition to examples of the right way and the wrong way, there are tips for remembering the rules. The second section deals with spelling and reintroduces us to axioms such as "I before E except after C". In the third section, punctuation and its pitfalls are covered. The chapter talks about casual writing as in emails compared to formal writing as for homework and why the rules are relaxed between friends but must be obeyed for homework. This is extremely useful and deserves a place in every classroom. Recommended. Reviewer: Ellen Welty

Gr 5–7—These two volumes pack a lot of facts into short page-counts but include quite a few problems as well. Much of the information in I Wish I Knew That is too basic or commonly known to entertain or impress, and is so superficial that it doesn't serve to educate. Brevity also breeds understatements, incomplete explanations, and sloppy summarizations. President Kennedy gets five sentences, and the last one is this: "However, on November 22, 1963, he was shot by a man named Lee Harvey Oswald while riding through Dallas, Texas, in an open-topped car." Write…Every Time has the potential for greater usefulness, but errors render it less than reliable. For instance, in the phrase "many people," "many" is mislabeled as an indefinite pronoun. In the sentence "The burglar goes up," the adverb is said to answer how rather than where. Needed examples are absent, and others, such as "My top could be being crumpled up since it's in a suitcase," are poorly written. The risks are many in serving up a lot of material in short order, and here they do not pay off.—Alyson Low, Fayetteville Public Library, AR

    This book doesn't have an impressive look, but it has done a miracle for my son. My son has a big aversion to any mandatory reading and he struggles with grammar, but

    Writing Made Easy

    Writing is not so easy, but this little gem will guide you on all those grammatical things that troubled us in school. My own children refer to this book when writing papers because schools just don't teach English the way it use to be taught. I think this would make a great addition to any library!
