This book is part of the "Write Your Own" series and provides tools to generate ideas, write, publish, and understand the fairy tale better. The bottom of the pages shows a bar that monitors a writer's progress in writing. The book uses a step-by-step approach, from getting started, word choices, characters, and tricks of the trade. Throughout the book, authors of fairy tales or fantasies give some real world examples of techniques they use. Each page provides "Now it's your turn" suggestions for writing exercises, looking at specific fairy tale collections, or gathering information for writing a fairy tale. The book is thorough and admirable in its didactic approach to writing in a creative form. However, one wonders if the book attempts to do too much. Some of the illustrations or photographs can be more distracting than helpful. It also might have been helpful to include more than just the FactHound web site for Internet resources, as well as making the "more fairy tales" easier to read. Some middle school and high school authors may be able to gather some writing tips or discover new authors to read. Reviewer: Elizabeth Fronk
