Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Karr
"The Write Your Own" series consists of slim, library-bound volumes that address creative writing issues for middle grade students. Tips are offered on getting started with the writing process (e.g., create your own space, write regularly). After the student has settled in with dictionary and thesaurus at hand, the books proceed to discussions of point of view, character, plot, and more. Case studies sprinkled throughout use excerpts from published works and/or comments from published authors. Backmatter includes a glossary, an index, and pointers to further information. This particular volume emphasizes the classic Arthurian and Robin Hood tales. Through excerpts of the best, from Robin McKinley and T. H. White, Rosinsky advises the readers to grasp onto one of these themes and take it in their own (hopefully new!) directions. The series concept is certainly useful and the approach is well-geared to its age level, but the book design is overly busy, and this volume emphasizes Internet research. The most useful directive would be the common sense one: Read the original books, read more, start writing, and keep writing! Reviewer: Kathleen Karr
