    more from this reviewer

This book is extremely comprehensive and excellent for seasoned

This book is extremely comprehensive and excellent for seasoned and aspiring writers. The listing by ‘cultures’ is extremely helpful for reference by what writers are actually writing about. It tells you where the names came from and their meanings making choosing a name all that much more fun and appealing.

AND you could also use it for potential baby names!

This Is A Must For Writers

I love to write, but I always get stuck on character names. Not only does this book provide names and meanings from many different origins it also lists surnames and covers naming practices in the different countries. This book is great!

    This is AWESOME!

This has saved my hide already! Yes, I have baby name books and I've hyperlinked all the baby name websites I could imagine, but this book is organized so well. I could do a search for a certain cultural base, or by the meaning of the name. It's easy to use and most of the names are actually usable. Well, there are a couple of names in there I wouldn't use, but if I were doing a historical? Maybe. Anyway, great book!

    encredible source

As a writer who stresses more about names of charectors than almost any thing else this book was a gold mine. It gives the how-tos of nameing male and female charectors depending on their personality, description and the type of novel (i.e. sci-fi or mystery) then it provides male and female names with their deffinitions catigoized under their country of origin. The only thing I found this book lacking was that there was no pronunciation of the names.

    Good Source of Names.

The previous reviewer who left a poor review didn't even have the correct information in one example. While this may not mean the book is correct, the reviewer may be mistaken. I would agree with the other reviewers that the sound of the name is often more important than the meaning. Unfortunately, this book does not tell you how to pronounce the names, but it is still a good source of ideas. If you're really all that concerned about the meaning of a name, you should buy several books and cross-reference anyway, because I'm sure this is not the only book in the world that MAY contain mistakes. If you just want a book to help name your characters this one will do fine.

    Very Helpful

This book is definitly a good source for names. Also, I could care less if the name Marie is listed as meaning 'bitter', it is the sound of a name that is important to me. I recommend this book because it includes helpful information on naming your characters and why its so important. Better than a book on naming babies.

Now I know I can't name her Cassidy...

I'm an aspiring writer and this book was recommended to me via another book. I figured what the heck? I was going to buy a baby name book anyway, why not get a book that also includes surnames? The whole Myrna/Maria episode rather irritates me because naming my characters doesn't really have to do with what the name means, but what image it portrays. I would definately recommend this book to authors.
