Our Review
A Road Map to Publishing Success
As the owner of his own literary agency and rep to the authors of bestsellers such as the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, Jeff Herman knows the secrets to success in the book publishing business. He shares his knowledge and insights in his book author's bible, Writer's Guide to Book Editors, Publishers and Literary Agents, 2001-2002. Long considered the guide for finding an agent or publisher, Herman's directory offers a comprehensive listing of the people and agencies writers need to know.

Herman's directories include United States and Canadian publishers, university presses, a section on specialty presses (religious, spiritual, and inspirational), and a listing of literary agents. Each listing includes the basics, such as names and contact information, details about the types of work each agency is seeking, and recent sales or publications. In his agent directory, Herman also includes such minutiae as birthdays, personal hobbies, professional areas of interest, and insider advice on the best ways to initiate contact. Especially enlightening are the comments from key folks within each agency regarding a "dream client," the "client from Hell," and laundry lists of the most common mistakes authors make.

Herman goes far beyond mere listings, though, providing step-by-step instructions on how to approach agents and editors and how to go about getting one's work out of the slush pile and into the hands of some of the top names in the industry. He offers several informative sections, including a description of how literary agents work, a workshop on writing the perfect query letter, a section highlighting how to put together a winning book proposal, and advice on how to negotiate a publishing contract. Herman also offers tips on maximizing the chances of success for those writers who choose to submit unagented and/or unsolicited manuscripts and discusses the pros and cons of vanity and self-publishing for those who choose to go that route. In keeping with the current state of the industry, Herman also offers an extensive index of online writer's resources.

For writers seeking publication, Jeff Herman's guide is an indispensable tool. It's as comprehensive and complete as any such guide could be, and with its combination of advice, insider tips, and directory information, it's one of the most valuable writing references to be found anywhere.
