Editorial Reviews

Carter B. Horsely
This is a marvelous book of 43 short, witty, incisive, brilliant, important and generally remarkable essays by writers, many of them famous screenwriters, about movie directors who have been photographed with great style by Susan Gray. This is not just a book for wannabee directors, or film buffs, or artists, but everyone.
The City Review
Library Journal
Thirty-nine writers, ranging from Tobias Wolff to Edwidge Danticat, here provide sketches of 40 film directors. Those covered include Robert Altman, Michelangelo Antonioni, Bernardo Bertolucci, Martha Coolidge, Sidney Lumet, John Schlesinger, Penelope Spheeris, and Kenneth Branagh. Some of the writers provide career overviews, while others analyze a director's unique attributes. Ariel Dorfman describes Roman Polanski's intuitive perfectionism. Jack Womack explains Terry Gilliam's gift for creating believable worlds. Walter Mosley's homage to Ron Howard would have suited the late Frank Capra. Unusual--and very welcome--for a book of this nature is a name and film-title index. Also included are filmographies for the directors and writing credits for their examiners. While not a comprehensive reference book, this is nevertheless most appropriate for cinema scholars and knowledgeable film fans.--Kim R. Holston, American Inst. for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters, Malvern, PA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
