    Broadcast Newswriting for the Professional

Merv Block was a broadcast newswriter; in fact, he was one of Cronkite's writers. Merv is a pro's pro. He offers good sensible writing tips and then he shreds broadcast news scripts in an effort to make them better. The technique works. Along with Ed Bliss's book, Writing News for Broadcast(Columbia University Press), Merv Block's book can be rated one of the bibles of newswriting.

I didn't read the entire text because....

I didn't need to. I was able to easily pick the areas that directly related to my job/interest. This book would be well worth the money even if Merv would have stopped after the first three chapters (Dozen Deadly Don'ts, Venial Sins, and Top Tips of the Trade). His common sense approach, style, and rhythm make his solid points and tips easy to read and understand. And you don't have to be a broadcast journalist; anyone looking to polish his/her writing skills will benefit. But if you are a broadcaster, consider it a must to pick it up, read it, learn from it, and apply it to your job. Your audience will love you for it!
