Overview

Writing for Magazines is a practical introduction to what a magazine writer does. The book explores the best magazines for beginning writers, how to think like a writer, how to get ideas, how to find the time to write, how to set goals, how to acquire the tools of a writer, and how to defeat writer's block. The author then shows you where to go from there: from the first draft and revision to the basics of grammar and the development of your style to the mailing of your first article. Along the way, Writing for Magazines gives you examples of magazine articles that are effective and enjoyable to read. Also included is advice from editors on how to get published and information about resources that can aid you as a new writer. At the end of every chapter, you will find "Jumpstart" exercises to get you started writing. Whether you want to write for magazines as a career or as a sideline, Writing for Magazines can help you achieve your goals.

    A Keeper

This book is definitely a complete guide - I feel totally comfortable with my decision to start freelancing in magazines. I just wish the word 'beginner' had been omitted from the title. Although there's plenty of basics (writing a lead, organizing your thoughts, general grammar and thoughts on style and writer's block), the nitty gritties are fully covered.
