From The CriticsReviewer: Michael L. Troxell, MEd, RRT (Medical College of Ohio)
Description: This six chapter review for the Advanced Practitioner Exam for Respiratory Care includes a section on test preparation, a pretest, and a posttest. The test questions are referenced to a book list at the end of each section. The book also includes an exam matrix designed by the National Board for Respiratory Care to organize the content of the exam.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a review for the test. This may be the only book written in this format for this purpose. There are other books to prepare for this respiratory care exam, but the format varies. Previous versions of this book by the same author have been successful.
Audience: The intent is to provide a practical guide for respiratory therapy students preparing for the exam. The book may also provide exercises for the experienced practitioner to prepare for recredentialing. Respiratory care educators may also find the book useful as a guide for the preparation of test questions. The author has experience as a respiratory care educator and an author of other test review books.
Features: The layout of the book is not unique. There are black-and-white illustration placed to coincide with test questions in the book. There are several tables and graphs to clarify points made in the text. An index is not necessary in this type of book. There are a variety of useful equations on the inside of the front and back covers.
Assessment: This book may serve as a study guide for this exam by individuals with a previous background in respiratory care. The book is a generalguide but lacks the detail necessary for a complete program on this subject; therefore, the reader will find it necessary to refer to the books listed for further explanation of the test questions. A medical library or bookstore could have this book available for students preparing for this exam.
