Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-- Jade and Deena find typical adolescent amusement in harmless crank calls until Deena's half-brother, Chuck, joining them, overhears a murder being committed. The three teenagers' bravado in seeking out the crime scene leads them into grave danger. This is a good thriller-type mystery in the style of Edith Maxwell's Just Dial a Number (Archway, 1988), but is limited by the stilted dialogue of the adult characters and an unconvincing, overwrought portrayal of the killer. The dominant theme, which could have been excellent, is undermined by inappropriate melodramatic scenes. However, high-traffic murder-mystery sections in young adult departments would not be downgraded by adding this title .--Alice Cronin, Mountainside Public Library, NJ

This book starts out with the two main characters Deena and Jade. In the biggining of the story the two girls were having a seepover in dennas house. As i read the book i noticed that they werent very exited they sounded more like bored. Anyways Deena took out her new cell phone. Jade started her mischevous smileand and grabed the phone away fron Deena and she started making mean prank call to a next door naightbor. But when Jade got caught she hanged rigt up and gave it to Denna and told her to call 'Rob' Deenas crush she was nerves at first but when she did a whisperi voice she felt so so powerful. The next day she and her dad had to pick up Chuk her step brother. He was tought looking. The reason he ha to move to shady side with his dad was because he had gotten in trouble in the city he had gone to jail because he had jacked a car. Weeks had happend after that one night Deena invted Jade for a sleep over to do some new prank calls. When Deena started a prank phone call she herd a noise down stairs but she thougth it was just Chuck so she just continued her sexy phone call but when she said all the sexy things she could have thought of she heard a BEEEEEEEEEEEEP and she knew what it was it was Chuck hanging up at the other side of the phone she heard foot steps going thru her room she herd the knob of her door openand she felt a chill when Chuck was out there with his goffy smile she knew he was gonna tell on her if she dint do what he wanted her to do. but what he wanted to tdo was do thretening phone calls and so he did a day had happend and Deena told Jade and her step brother not to ever prank call agan but before she finished har sentence they said I agree then Deena and Jade were talking about how scary Fear Street was and Chuck over herd the combrsationand sayed there is nothing to be afraid of and he said ill prove it to you so he grabed the phone book and the phone and looked for the location fear street he found one and dial the numders but at the fifteen ring a lady answerd whispering and said help me! you are my only hope he is trying to kill me! but rigth at that moment they heard a slap and a guy awnserd he said WRONG NUMBER!!!!!!!!!!!and hanged up. Chuck sayed it was some one nuts but he was as shocked ass Jade and Deena was. So he told Deena and Jade to stay home while he invesigateded the place but Deena and Jade wanted to go when they got there they knoked on the door but no one awnserd so they went inside it was empty when they saw a huge puddle of dark water there was a stabed corsp in the floor lying there chuck thougth she was still alive to he took the knife out of her chest but he herd foot steps going down the stairs amasked guy was there he was wearing a black mask and leather gloves he had a tought voice and Jade and Deena were runing for their lives until Deena relized Chuck was still in the house. The masked man was cicling Chuck so chuck grabed the knife that was stucked in the ladies chest. Chucks finger prints were on the knife and he gets arested for that proof of the knife. The wrong number WAS scarefully delicious. It was definitly a good read. It had vivid details and kept you on the edge of your seat. A little bit gory for the younger children, but is recommended by me for grades 5 and up. Definitely follow up by reading The Wrong Number 2.

I bought this book in 1990. I was 13 yrs. I loved this book. I still have it. Just to have it. I have long ago stopped reading R.L Stine and have moved on. However, R.L Stine books still have a place in my heart. So when I pass this book in the library or the book store. I smile. What a great read!! His books are quick and hard to put down. The Wrong Number is The Right Book to pick up. You will never forget it!

I liked this book. It had a good story line going until the last quarter of the book where it's just unnececary action without too much of a plot. Still yet, I enjoyed this book alot.
