More About This Book

Overview

The one hundred objects in this book all have a vital connection with World War II. Some were conceived before the War, and others during it, but all formed an essential part of the “tapestry” of that conflict. The pictures and text included in WWII in 100 Objects will resonate with readers, whether they are experts on World War II or approaching the subject for the first time.

Selected by two specialists in military history, this collection of objects, papers, and personal artifacts is organized chronologically to provide a completely new perspective of this devastating War. Included are items associated with American, British, Soviet, Australian, and other Allied nations as well as the Germans, Japanese, and Italians.

The largest object is the Atlantic Wall, built along the length of the French coast by the Germans to repel an Allied invasion. The smallest is an ampoule of penicillin, which was administered to wounded soldiers for the first time in World War II. It covers the War on land, at sea, and in the air, plus resistance and intelligence work.

U-boats decimating Allied shipping in the Atlantic, Spitfire and Messerschmitt aircraft dog-fighting over the English Channel, Kamikaze pilots targeting the ships of U.S. Pacific Fleet, and landing craft on the Normandy beaches are all among the objects represented, as well as intensely personal items, such as Roosevelt's wheelchair, and the note Eisenhower scribbled before D-Day taking the blame should the operation end in disaster. As a whole, the stories of these objects give a rounded view of the conflict.
