PRAISE FOR THE ADVENTURES OF JO SCHMO SERIES

"Lighter-than-air superhero fun."—Kirkus

"Trine’s offbeat brand of humor and Dormer’s angular, childlike illustrations . . . hit the mark."—Publishers Weekly

"There’s plenty of goofy middle-grade appeal here for both boys and girls."—Bulletin

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
In this second installment in the chapter book series "The Adventure of Jo Schmo," the young crime-fighting super hero is temporarily out of crimes to fight, even though mean girls Gertrude McSlime and Betty Sludgefoot are busy scheming how to get rid of Jo "and her little dog, too." ("Her dog's name is Too? I thought it was Raymond," asks Betty, who is "maybe two tacos short of a combination plate"). Luckily, Jo isn't bored for long, as she spends a breezy evening building a time machine ("She was pretty sure she could build a time machine if she put her mind to it") and then travels back to San Francisco in 1849, where she sets herself the task of capturing arch-villain Wyatt Burp (who can blow open the doors of bank vaults with a single foul-smelling belch) and his "Hole in the Head Gang" (so named because the moniker "Hole in the Wall Gang" was already taken). From start to finish, the book is extravagantly ridiculous fun. The storyline is pleasingly preposterous, the narrative voice never lets up with smart-alecky quips, Dormer's wacky illustrations explode off the page with manic energy of their own. Readers should be clamoring for more Jo Schmo adventures. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.
