XO Manowar: At War With Unity is basically a tie-in to the new Valiant series, Unity (for old readers, not at all like to original Unity). Here, the worlds “heroes” must fight with Aric because he has laid claim to a portion of Romania. While I question the ability of some of the heroes (specifically Ninjak, and a little bit Eternal Warrior) to hold their own against the XO Battle suit, we get some nice development of action and story line; especially how the world is coming to grips with the realization that super powered beings are among us. It was an especially interesting idea to bring Livewire into the fold, and the use of her powers in against the battle armor is especially interesting. The story develops nicely, although a little predictably at times. I wish there had been some unknown hero that was used in the story line – it would have been a great time to introduce a new hero to the Valiant universe. As a tie in to the Unity comic book (and the story goes back and forth between them), it works very well, and despite the odd name, you can see the group working together as a team (albeit a team where each member may have their own agenda). I am not sure how much I buy the ending of the book, but I guess it makes sense within the context of the series. I don’t know how the US would have been given priority in the decision making, but if you ignore that tidbit, it makes sense. And, like the other TPB’s, this sets up the next series of books (bringing us to “Armor Wars”) very nicely. The art is strong with tereturn of Cary Nord (I believe) and the writing seems to have picked up a little bit from the last TPB. I do wish the story had been a little more self contained, but it isn’t as bad as some other companies in that regard. I dislike being forced to buy a book to finish a story line – I prefer to be teased with another book that adds more information to the a storyline.
