Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This guide to X-rays features see-through X-ray photographs of people, vehicles, animals, and machines, while information panels highlight details of the items ("Can you see the backbone running down the center of this red snapper?"). While some of the trivia accompanying the images seems extraneous ("Imagine a see-through bus.... The one shown here uses diesel fuel to take passengers from point A to point B, but back in the 1820s buses were pulled along by horses"), those curious about the interiors of everything from spiders to MP3 players--or who have always wanted X-ray vision--should find the images compelling. Ages 6-12. (May)
Children's Literature - Jean Boreen
This very cool book shows readers the inside of everything from insects to athletes will be a sure hit for those looking for stunning pictures—or in this case, x-rays—and student-friendly text. The book starts by explaining what x-rays are and how they were discovered and then shifts to individual sections focused on "Human x-rays," "Object x-rays," "Nature x-rays," and "Sports x-rays." Within each section, readers find x-rays of people in action, objects, and what comprises them—the inside of an MP3 and its docking station may be of special interest to teen readers. In describing insects and mammals in action, the x-ray of a nautilus shell is not only educational but is also incredibly beautiful, and the necessities for many sports include an x-ray of a racecar driver and his protective gear that is quite interesting. The text that accompanies each page of pictures is appealing and informative. Colorful sidebars provide ancillary information about whatever has been highlighted on that page; for example, a page that explains cell phones also provides information on the first cell phone call in 1973. This wonderfully engaging text will inspire any young reader's imagination. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
